Why INFJs and ENTPs Keep Attracting Each Other

In the MBTI community, INFJ and ENTP are treated as "golden pairs." The idea is that their function stacks complement each other almost perfectly. An INFJ leads with Ni; an ENTP leads with Ne. An INFJ's auxiliary Fe is the ENTP's shadow Fe. An ENTP's auxiliary Ti is the INFJ's shadow Ti.

The theory is that these two types understand each other in ways other combinations don't, and find in each other a kind of mirroring that's rare.

This is partially right. The actual reason they keep finding each other is more interesting than complementary function stacks.

The function overlap

INFJ function stack: Ni - Fe - Ti - Se ENTP function stack: Ne - Ti - Fe - Si

The shared functions are Fe and Ti, but in opposite positions. The INFJ's auxiliary is the ENTP's tertiary. The INFJ's tertiary is the ENTP's auxiliary.

This creates genuine resonance. Both types are running Fe and Ti in their stacks, so they have shared vocabulary: a common orientation around both people and systems. But the balance is different. For the INFJ, Fe (harmony, interpersonal reading) is more developed than Ti (internal logic). For the ENTP, Ti (internal logical framework) is more developed than Fe (interpersonal attunement).

When an INFJ and an ENTP talk, they're often meeting in the space between these two functions: a conversation that's both conceptually rich (Ti) and emotionally resonant (Fe). For both of them, that combination is unusual in their experience.

The projection layer

Here's the Jungian reading that adds to the function-stack explanation.

INFJs carry an underdeveloped Ti and Se. The Ti in an INFJ isn't usually a strength: it's a precision analysis tool that works in service of Ni but isn't highly developed independently. ENTPs, with dominant Ne and auxiliary Ti, carry a developed internal logical framework combined with an openness to possibility that many INFJs find compelling.

In other words: an ENTP is partly carrying what an INFJ's less-developed functions look like when they're fully expressed. The INFJ projects some of their inner figure (the underdeveloped Ti that wants to be more rigorous and analytically free) onto the ENTP.

The same runs in reverse. ENTPs carry an underdeveloped Fe and Si. The Fe in an ENTP isn't usually a strength: it tends to be erratic, available in bursts but hard to sustain. INFJs, with auxiliary Fe and dominant Ni, carry a developed interpersonal warmth and depth of perception that many ENTPs find magnetic.

An INFJ is partly carrying what an ENTP's less-developed functions look like when they're fully expressed. The ENTP projects some of their inner figure (the underdeveloped Fe that wants genuine emotional depth and the Ni that seeks meaning) onto the INFJ.

Both are projecting their inner figure partly onto the other. This is why the pull is so strong and why both often describe the other as someone who "just gets it" in a way no one else does.

When the projection wears off

The projection-based pull creates an early relationship that feels like profound mutual recognition. It is, in part. The function resonance is real.

It's also partly each person experiencing their own underdeveloped inner life reflected back from someone who has developed the relevant functions. Which means as the relationship matures and the projection layer thins, the question becomes: what's here between two actual people, independent of what each was carrying for the other?

INFJs often find that the ENTP's logic, when fully present over time, can feel cold and dismissive. What read as intellectual honesty early on can start to read as a lack of care.

ENTPs often find that the INFJ's depth, when fully present over time, can feel heavy and demanding. What read as meaningful emotional connection early on can start to read as an intensity that's exhausting to sustain.

Neither reading is wrong. Both are partly what was always there, now visible without the projection filter.

The genuine compatibility case

Not every INFJ-ENTP relationship is projection-driven. Some of them are genuinely compatible people who happen to have function stacks that create real resonance.

The distinction: if the relationship is primarily sustained by the projection, it tends to struggle when the projection wears off (usually after six months to a year). If there's genuine compatibility underneath, the relationship deepens when the projection wears off rather than getting harder.

The test worth applying: when you see this person clearly: with their actual limitations, not the ideal version: do you still want to be in the relationship? Does the depth remain when you're not projecting onto them?

If you want to see where your inner-other axis currently sits, the Individuation Map measures it on a 0-95 scale. About eight minutes.

The friendship case

Not all INFJ-ENTP connections are romantic. The same dynamics play out in friendships.

INFJ-ENTP friendships often have a specific quality: both people experience the other as a thinking partner they can't easily replace. The INFJ brings depth of perception and emotional attunement. The ENTP brings analytical range and challenge. The combination produces a kind of conversation that both find rare.

This isn't just projection. The function resonance is real. What's useful to know is that the friendship will go through phases: early enthusiasm (projection high), middle friction (projection thinning), later depth or dissolution (the actual compatibility question). Both types have a tendency to interpret the friction phase as the relationship failing, when it's actually the relationship becoming more real.

The deeper point

The INFJ-ENTP pull isn't mystical compatibility. It's two function stacks that share specific functions in different positions, combined with the projection of the inner figure onto someone who has developed what you haven't.

That combination is powerful. It's also not a guarantee of lasting compatibility.

The question isn't "are INFJs and ENTPs compatible" in the abstract. It's "is this specific INFJ and this specific ENTP compatible once the projection wears off and they see each other without filters."

The type pair is the starting point. The people are what matters.

I built the Individuation Map because the inner-other axis: where the anima or animus projection lives: is measurable and shows up distinctly from the cognitive function description. The free result names which archetype you fall under. The paid reading shows where the inner-other axis currently sits and what it's currently projecting outward.

About eight minutes.
